ALTEMUS, a nonprofit educational organisation, is pleased to announce an open competition for its 2006 Leadership Training Programme.
Altemus is dedicated to helping young people from emerging democracies to develop their leadership potential. In pursuance of this goal it runs leadership development programmes. The Altemus Leadership Training Programme is 1 month in total and consists of two parts a foundational training (3 weeks) and a followup training (1 week). Our international team of leadership experts will train participants in:
Self-understanding Cultural awareness Visioning and goal-setting Communication skills Problem solving Conflict management Teamwork Stress management Leadership models and best practices
Our methodology consists of lectures, case studies, simulations, participant projects, group discussions, meetings with role model leaders and outdoor experiential learning. The programme is highly participatory and interactive. By placing you in unique social situations and wilderness environments, we challenge your body, mind, and soul. Practical and Financial Conditions of Participation
There is no cost to enter the competition. If selected the participant will be required to cover or find a sponsor to cover his/her travel and visa costs to the interview and the programme site. A limited number of scholarships covering travel and visa costs will be available based on proven need. These expenses in such cases will be reimbursed only on presentation of relevant and valid receipts. Only participants who attend the entire training course will be reimbursed.
Accommodations
Board and lodging will be provided and paid for by ALTEMUS.
Who can apply?
The 2006 ALTP is open young people(20-30 years old) who are nationals and residing in Central-Eastern Europe, the Baltic countries, the Newly Independent States, South-Eastern Europe and Turkey.
Criteria Applicants must:
1. be working directly with marginalised, disadvantaged or minority groups (e.g. HIV or AIDS victims, street children, orphans, disabled, persons with addictions, victims of violence, refugees…) OR 2. be working to fight poverty, social exclusion, discrimination, and/ or for a culture of peace OR 3. be working to prepare or support those working in the above fields (e.g. educators, psychologists, government employees, lawyers, journalists, doctors, NGO and social workers, mediators, students etc)
Applicants must have current or recent practical experience in one of the above categories.
Language requirement
A proficient knowledge of English (comprehension, reading and spoken)
Physical and psychological requirements A participant must be physically and psychologically resilient (rigorous outdoor activities are part of the curriculum e.g. 5-8 hours trekking with 10-15 kg backpack for 1 week). A participant must show initiative, be responsible and adaptable. A participant must attend the entire training and be prepared to act as multiplier in his/her community.
Selection Procedure
A committee of leadership experts will assess the application forms. Thirty two (32) applicants will be selected for interviews (January-February), from which sixteen (16) finalists will be invited to attend the 2006 Altemus Leadership Training programme. Ten (10) individuals will be placed on a reserve list.
